Staying in Corfu Town doesn’t mean giving up beach days. Several lovely swimming spots are within walking distance or a short ride from the town centre.

Whether you are looking for a quick morning swim, a relaxing afternoon by the sea or an easy beach day without renting a car, here are some of our favourite places to swim in and around Corfu Town — along with a few local tips from Nostalgia Corfu Town Apartments.

Anemomylos – A Quick Swim Close to Corfu Town

Anemomylos is one of the easiest places to enjoy a refreshing swim without leaving Corfu Town. Located along the beautiful Garitsa waterfront, near the historic windmill, it combines clear Ionian waters with lovely views towards the Old Fortress and the town.

Rather than a traditional sandy beach, Anemomylos is a local swimming spot with easy access to the sea, making it ideal for a quick dip before or after exploring Corfu Town.

Nostalgia Local Tip: We especially recommend Anemomylos for a morning swim or in the late afternoon, when you can combine your dip with a relaxing walk along Garitsa Bay.

Mon Repos – A Peaceful Swim Surrounded by Nature

Mon Repos is a lovely choice if you want to combine a swim with a peaceful walk through one of Corfu Town’s greenest areas. The surrounding estate is full of trees, shaded paths and beautiful views, creating a much more relaxed atmosphere than the busy town centre.

The swimming spots around Mon Repos are especially pleasant for travellers who enjoy nature and prefer a quieter setting. The sea is usually clear and refreshing, and the area is ideal for spending a few calm hours away from the crowds.

Nostalgia Local Tip: Combine your swim with a walk through the Mon Repos estate. It is a beautiful way to enjoy both the natural and historic side of Corfu in the same outing.

Faliraki – Swim with a View of the Old Fortress

Faliraki is one of the most atmospheric places to swim in Corfu Town. Located just below the Old Town, it offers beautiful views of the Old Fortress and the sea, making it a great choice if you want to combine sightseeing with a quick swim.

It is especially convenient for visitors who are already exploring the historic centre and want to cool off without travelling far. The setting is urban, scenic and very characteristic of Corfu Town.

Nostalgia Local Tip: Faliraki is a lovely choice in the late afternoon, especially if you want to continue your evening with a walk, dinner or drinks in the Old Town.

Old Fortress – A Unique Swim Beside Corfu’s History

Swimming near the Old Fortress is one of the most distinctive experiences you can have in Corfu Town. The historic setting, the views across the Ionian Sea and the impressive fortress walls make this spot feel completely different from a typical beach.

It is a great option if you are already exploring the Old Town and want to combine sightseeing with a refreshing swim. The area is more about atmosphere and location than a traditional beach experience.

Nostalgia Local Tip: Bring water shoes if you have them, and combine your swim with a visit to the Old Fortress for one of the most memorable half-days in Corfu Town.

Kanoni – Iconic Views and a Refreshing Swim

Kanoni is one of the most famous areas of Corfu, known for its spectacular views of Mouse Island, Vlacherna Monastery and the airport runway.

But Kanoni is not only about the view. Behind the Flisvos restaurant, on the right-hand side, you will find a small sandy and organised beach. Although it is located next to a hotel, the beach is open to the public and offers sunbeds, a beach bar and easy access to the sea.

It is a great choice if you want to combine swimming, relaxing by the beach and exploring one of Corfu’s most photographed locations.

Nostalgia Local Tip: Combine your swim with a walk to Vlacherna Monastery and enjoy a coffee or drink overlooking Mouse Island. Kanoni is especially beautiful in the late afternoon.

Vidos Island – A Peaceful Escape Just off Corfu Town

Vidos Island is a wonderful choice if you want to escape the busy streets of Corfu Town without travelling far. This small, green island lies just opposite Corfu Town and can be reached by a short boat ride departing from the Old Port of Corfu.

Vidos is known for its peaceful atmosphere, shaded paths and clear waters. It is ideal for visitors who want to combine a swim with a gentle walk in nature and enjoy a slower, more relaxed side of Corfu.

The island is not a typical organised beach destination, so it is better suited to travellers who enjoy simple swimming spots and natural surroundings.

Nostalgia Local Tip: The boat to Vidos departs from the Old Port of Corfu. Check the seasonal timetable before you go, and take water and comfortable shoes for your walk around the island.

Which Corfu Town Swimming Spot Should You Choose?

Each swimming spot around Corfu Town has its own character.

Choose Anemomylos for a quick and easy swim close to town, Mon Repos for a peaceful setting surrounded by greenery, Faliraki for atmosphere and Old Fortress views, the Old Fortress area for a unique combination of history and sea, Kanoni for an organised sandy beach with iconic scenery, and Vidos Island for a quiet half-day escape in nature.

The best choice depends on how much time you have, whether you prefer an organised beach or a simple swimming spot, and how far you want to travel.

Rain in Corfu doesn’t have to spoil your day. In fact, a rainy day can be the perfect opportunity to discover another side of the island — its fascinating museums, historic churches, cosy cafés, traditional flavours and charming Old Town atmosphere.

Whether you are visiting Corfu for a few days or enjoying a longer stay, there are plenty of wonderful things to do when the skies turn grey. Here are some of our favourite ways to make the most of a rainy day in Corfu.

1. Explore Corfu’s Museums

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to discover Corfu’s rich history and culture through its museums. From ancient artefacts and impressive collections to elegant historic houses, there are several fascinating places to explore while staying comfortably indoors.

The Museum of Asian Art, housed in the beautiful Palace of St. Michael and St. George, is one of the most distinctive museums on the island. You can also visit the Archaeological Museum of Corfu to learn more about the island’s ancient past, or step into Casa Parlante for a glimpse into everyday aristocratic life in 19th-century Corfu.

Museum visits are an easy and enjoyable way to spend a few hours away from the rain while discovering a deeper side of the island.

2. Visit Saint Spyridon Church

No visit to Corfu Town is complete without stepping inside the Church of Saint Spyridon, dedicated to the island’s patron saint. Its distinctive bell tower is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Old Town, while the interior offers a peaceful and atmospheric escape from the rain.

Take a little time to admire the beautiful decoration, learn more about Saint Spyridon and his importance to Corfu, and experience a place that remains deeply connected to the island’s history and traditions.

Because the church is located right in the heart of the Old Town, it is also easy to combine your visit with nearby museums, cafés and a stroll through the surrounding kantounia once the rain eases.

3. Wander Through Corfu Old Town

Corfu Old Town has a special charm on a rainy day. The narrow kantounia, elegant arcades and historic buildings create an atmosphere that feels completely different under grey skies.

Take a slow walk through the centre, browse small local shops and stop beneath the arcades of the Liston when the rain gets heavier. You may even find that the quieter streets make it easier to notice architectural details and hidden corners that are often missed on a busy sunny day.

A light rain can make Corfu Town feel even more romantic and atmospheric — just remember to bring an umbrella and comfortable shoes.

4. Enjoy a Long Corfiot Lunch

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy a long, traditional Corfiot lunch. Find a cosy taverna, take your time and discover some of the island’s most characteristic flavours.

Try local dishes such as sofrito, pastitsada or bourdeto, accompanied by fresh bread and a glass of local wine. Corfiot cuisine reflects the island’s long history and Venetian influence, making a meal here much more than just a break from the rain.

On a grey afternoon, good food, warm surroundings and traditional flavours can easily become one of the highlights of your day.

5. Stop for Coffee and Something Sweet

A peaceful rainy stroll through the charming streets of Corfu Old Town.

Rainy days and cosy cafés are a perfect match. Corfu Town has plenty of welcoming places where you can take a break, enjoy a good coffee and watch the rain from a warm corner.

Pair your coffee with a slice of cake, a traditional sweet or a local treat, and simply enjoy the slower rhythm of the day. Around the Old Town, you will find everything from elegant cafés to small hidden spots tucked away in charming streets.

Sometimes, one of the best things to do on a rainy day in Corfu is simply to sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

6. Discover Local Products and Do a Little Shopping.A rainy day is also a great opportunity to explore Corfu’s local shops and take a little piece of the island home with you.

In Corfu Town, you will find stores selling traditional products such as kumquat liqueur and sweets, local olive oil, honey, herbs and handmade delicacies. You can also browse small boutiques for ceramics, jewellery, artwork and unique souvenirs created by local makers.

Shopping at a relaxed pace is a pleasant way to stay dry while discovering more about Corfu’s flavours, traditions and craftsmanship.

7. Enjoy an Indoor Wine or Olive Oil Tasting

A rainy day can be a wonderful opportunity to discover some of Corfu’s local flavours through an indoor tasting experience.

Depending on availability, you may find wineries, local producers or specialty shops offering tastings of Corfiot wine, olive oil and other traditional products. It is a relaxed way to learn more about the island’s agricultural traditions while staying sheltered from the weather.

A tasting experience can also make a lovely addition to your day if you are looking for something a little different from museums and sightseeing.

8. Relax and Enjoy a Cosy Afternoon at Your Apartment

A quiet afternoon indoors — the perfect way to slow down and relax on a rainy day in Corfu.

Sometimes, the best plan for a rainy afternoon is no plan at all. Head back to your apartment, make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, open a bottle of wine and enjoy a slower few hours indoors.

At Nostalgia Corfu Town Apartments, you can prepare something in your own kitchen, watch a film, read a book or simply relax while the rain passes outside. A quiet afternoon can be exactly what you need after several busy days of exploring the island.

Rainy weather is also a good excuse to recharge before heading out again when the skies clear.

A Rainy Day in Corfu Can Still Be Beautiful

A rainy day in Corfu does not mean you have to put your holiday on hold. It can be a chance to slow down, discover the island’s culture, taste local flavours and enjoy places you might otherwise overlook on a sunny day.

From museums and historic churches to cosy cafés, traditional food and relaxing moments indoors, Corfu offers plenty of ways to make a grey day feel special.

And when the rain finally stops, step outside again — the island often feels even fresher, greener and more beautiful after a shower.

September is one of the most rewarding months to experience Corfu. The intense heat of midsummer begins to soften, the island feels calmer, and the sea is still beautifully warm after months of sunshine.

It is an ideal time for travellers who want to combine relaxing beach days with sightseeing, walks through Corfu Town, visits to traditional villages and leisurely meals without the peak-season crowds. The island still feels very much alive, but the pace is gentler and more authentic.

From swimming in crystal-clear waters to exploring Corfu’s countryside and tasting seasonal local flavours, September offers the perfect balance between summer and early autumn.

Weather in Corfu in September

September in Corfu usually brings warm, pleasant days and slightly cooler evenings, making it one of the most comfortable months for exploring the island. The summer heat gradually becomes milder, while the sea remains warm enough for swimming throughout much of the month.

Most days are still sunny, although occasional showers can appear as autumn approaches. This change in weather also brings a fresher feel to the landscape, especially in the countryside and greener parts of the island.

For visitors, this means you can enjoy the beach during the day, explore Corfu Town without the intense midday heat and spend your evenings comfortably outdoors.

Best Things to Do in Corfu in September

Enjoy the Bees and Warm Sea

September is still a wonderful month for beach days in Corfu. The sea has warmed throughout the summer, while the beaches are generally calmer than during July and August.

You can spend the day swimming, relaxing by the water or exploring some of the island’s beautiful coastline at a slower pace. Popular beaches such as Paleokastritsa, Glyfada and Issos remain excellent choices, while smaller coves are ideal if you prefer somewhere more peaceful.

Early September still feels very much like summer, while later in the month offers a quieter atmosphere and more space to enjoy the island’s beaches.

Explore Corfu Old Town

September is an excellent time to discover Corfu Old Town, especially when the summer crowds begin to thin out. Wander through the narrow kantounia, admire the Venetian architecture and take your time exploring small squares, churches and hidden corners.

A walk along the Liston and Spianada is especially pleasant in the softer September weather, while the Old and New Fortresses offer beautiful views over the town and the Ionian Sea.

Without the intense heat of midsummer, you can enjoy Corfu Town at a more relaxed pace, stopping for coffee, local food or an evening stroll as the town lights begin to glow.

Visit Traditional Villages and the Countryside

September is a lovely time to discover Corfu beyond the beaches. The countryside is quieter, the temperatures are more comfortable, and traditional villages offer a glimpse into the island’s slower, everyday rhythm.

Take a drive through villages such as Pelekas, Lakones or Old Perithia, stop at a local café or taverna, and enjoy the views along the way. This is also a beautiful period to explore olive groves, rural roads and small settlements that often feel very different from the busy coastal resorts.

Travelling through the interior of Corfu in September gives you the chance to experience a more peaceful and authentic side of the island.

Hiking and Nature

September is also a great month for walking and exploring Corfu’s natural landscapes. With milder temperatures than in midsummer, longer walks become much more enjoyable, especially in the morning or late afternoon.

You can follow sections of the Corfu Trail, walk through olive groves and countryside paths, or explore coastal routes with beautiful views over the Ionian Sea. The island’s hills, rural villages and green interior reveal a completely different side of Corfu away from the beaches.

For nature lovers, September offers a pleasant balance of warm weather, quieter trails and plenty of opportunities to discover the island on foot.

Taste Local Food, Wine and Olive Oil

September is a wonderful time to enjoy Corfu through its flavours. Traditional tavernas remain lively, while the calmer pace of the season makes long lunches and relaxed dinners even more enjoyable.

Try local dishes such as sofrito, pastitsada and bourdeto, accompanied by Corfiot wine or local products made with the island’s olive oil. You can also visit wineries, olive mills or local producers to learn more about the traditions behind some of Corfu’s best-known flavours.

Food is an important part of the island’s identity, and September is an ideal month to slow down, taste and enjoy it.

Take a Boat Trip or Day Cruise

September is still an excellent month to explore Corfu from the sea. The weather is usually warm, the water remains inviting, and boat trips often feel more relaxed than during the busiest summer weeks.

Choose a coastal cruise, visit hidden coves and small beaches, or take a day trip to nearby islands and seaside villages. It is a wonderful way to see a different side of Corfu and enjoy the coastline from a new perspective.

For an even quieter experience, consider an early morning or late afternoon trip, when the light is softer and the atmosphere on the water is especially peaceful.

Is Corfu Crowded in September?

September is generally much calmer than July and August, especially as the month progresses. Popular beaches, Corfu Town and well-known attractions are still lively, but the overall atmosphere is more relaxed.

Early September can still feel quite busy, particularly in the most popular coastal areas. By mid and late September, however, visitor numbers usually begin to fall, making it easier to explore the island, find a table at a taverna or enjoy a beach without the peak-season crowds.

For travellers who want warm weather and plenty of activity without the intensity of high summer, September is one of the best times to visit Corfu.

What to Pack for Corfu in September

Packing for Corfu in September is relatively easy, as the weather is still mostly warm and summery. Light clothing, comfortable shoes, swimwear, a hat and sunscreen are essential for daytime activities.

It is also a good idea to bring a light jacket or cardigan for cooler evenings, especially later in the month. A small umbrella or lightweight rain jacket can also be useful in case of an occasional shower.

If you plan to explore villages, walk along countryside paths or hike sections of the Corfu Trail, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.

Why Stay at Nostalgia Corfu Town Apartments in September

September is an ideal month to stay close to Corfu Town while still enjoying easy access to the rest of the island. At Nostalgia Corfu Town Apartments, you can combine the freedom of an independent stay with a convenient location for exploring beaches, villages and the historic centre.

After a day of sightseeing or swimming, return to a comfortable apartment with your own kitchen, relaxing spaces and everything you need for a slower, more flexible holiday.

For travellers who want to experience Corfu beyond the typical summer rush, September offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the island at a gentler pace.

Final Thoughts on Corfu in September

Corfu in September combines many of the best parts of summer with a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere. The sea is still warm, the weather remains pleasant, and there is plenty of time to enjoy beaches, villages, local food and the island’s natural beauty.

Whether you prefer slow days by the sea, cultural walks through Corfu Town or exploring the countryside, September is a beautiful month to experience the island at your own pace.

Shopping in Corfu is more than simply choosing souvenirs. It is a chance to take home a small part of the island through its flavours, traditions and local craftsmanship.

Corfu offers plenty of meaningful things to discover during your holiday. Look for kumquat products, Corfiot olive oil, local wine, handmade ceramics and traditional sweets.

Whether you prefer local food products, handmade items or something uniquely Corfiot, this guide will help you decide what is worth looking for and what to bring back home from your holidays.

Kumquat Products – Corfu’s Most Famous Souvenir

Κumquat is one of Corfu’s most distinctive local products and one of the easiest flavours of the island to take home with you. The small citrus fruit has been cultivated in Corfu for generations and is now closely associated with the island.

You will find kumquat used in liqueurs, sweets, jams, preserves and other local treats. Bottles of kumquat liqueur are especially popular as gifts, while candied kumquat and marmalade are easy choices if you prefer something sweet.

When shopping, look for products made in Corfu. Do not choose something simply because the packaging looks attractive.

Corfiot Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of the most authentic products you can bring home from Corfu. Olive trees cover much of the island, and olive cultivation has been part of Corfiot life for centuries

Look for extra virgin olive oil produced in Corfu, ideally from a local estate or small producer. Many shops also offer beautifully packaged bottles that make excellent gifts without losing the connection to the island.

If you have the opportunity, visit an olive mill or join an olive oil tasting. You can learn how local olive oil is produced and discover the differences in flavour. Then choose a bottle you will genuinely enjoy back home.

Local Wine and Corfiot Liqueurs

Corfu has a long tradition of wine production. Local wines can make a wonderful souvenir for anyone who enjoys discovering regional flavours. You can find both white and red wines produced on the island, often from small wineries and family-run estates.

Alongside wine, Corfu is also known for local liqueurs, with kumquat being the most famous. You may also come across other fruit or herb-based spirits produced in small quantities.

If possible, choose bottles from local producers or visit a winery for a tasting before you buy. It makes the experience more personal and helps you take home something that truly reflects the island.

Traditional Sweets and Local Delicacies

Corfu has a lovely selection of traditional sweets and local treats that are easy to take home and share with family or friends.

Look for mandolato, a soft nougat traditionally made with honey and nuts. Another local favourite is mandoles, caramelised almonds with their characteristic red coating.. You will also find local biscuits, preserves, jams and sweets made with citrus fruits and other island ingredients.

These are especially good choices if you want a souvenir that is easy to pack and gives you a small taste of Corfu once your holiday is over.

Handmade Ceramics and Local Crafts

Corfu is also a lovely place to look for handmade ceramics and locally crafted decorative items. Small workshops and independent shops often sell pieces inspired by the island’s colours, nature and traditional patterns.

You may find hand-painted plates, bowls, mugs, tiles and decorative objects that make distinctive souvenirs or gifts. Because many of these pieces are handmade, each one can feel a little different and more personal than a mass-produced souvenir.

When possible, choose items made by local artists or workshops. It is a simple way to support local craftsmanship while taking home something with a genuine connection to Corfu.

Leather Sandals and Accessories

Leather sandals and handmade accessories are another popular choice when shopping in Corfu. In Corfu Town, you can find small shops selling leather sandals, belts, bags and other accessories, often in classic Mediterranean styles.

Choose pieces that are well made and comfortable. Do not focus only on items labelled as souvenirs. A good pair of leather sandals or a handmade bag can be both practical and a lasting reminder of your holiday.

If you prefer something more personal, look for small independent shops and local makers, where you may find designs that are less mass-produced and more distinctive.

Herbs, Spices and Local Pantry Products

Corfu’s local shops and markets are also good places to look for herbs, spices and other pantry products that are easy to take home.

You may find dried oregano, thyme, sage and other Mediterranean herbs, as well as sea salt, honey, preserves and locally made sauces. These small items are practical, easy to pack and perfect for anyone who enjoys cooking.

Whenever possible, check where the product was made and choose Corfiot or Greek producers. It is a simple way to make sure your souvenir has a genuine connection to the island.

Jewellery and Meaningful Souvenirs

Jewellery can be a beautiful way to bring home something more personal from Corfu. Around Corfu Town, you will find independent boutiques and workshops offering handmade pieces inspired by the sea, nature and Mediterranean design.

Look for jewellery created by local designers, especially pieces made with silver, natural stones or motifs connected to the island. These can make elegant gifts and often feel more special than a typical souvenir.

You may also find small decorative objects, art prints or handmade keepsakes that reflect Corfu’s character and make lasting reminders of your trip.

Where to Shop in Corfu Town

Corfu Town is one of the best places on the island for shopping, especially if you enjoy browsing small independent stores rather than large shopping centres.

The narrow streets of Corfu Old Town are perfect for browsing. Around the Liston and the surrounding kantounia, you will find boutiques, delicatessens, jewellery shops and leather stores. It is worth wandering beyond the busiest streets, as some of the most interesting finds are tucked away in quieter corners.

For food products, look for specialist shops selling Corfiot olive oil, kumquat products, wine, honey and traditional sweets. For gifts, handmade ceramics, jewellery and locally crafted items are usually more distinctive than generic souvenirs.

Shopping in Corfu Town is also part of the experience itself: take your time, explore the side streets and combine it with a coffee or a relaxed walk through the historic centre.

What Can You Take Home in Your Luggage?

Most small souvenirs, packaged foods, ceramics and handmade items are easy to take home, but liquids and certain food products may be subject to airline or customs restrictions.

If you are travelling with hand luggage, remember that airport security limits apply to liquids. This includes olive oil, wine, liqueurs and many jams. Larger bottles are generally better packed carefully in checked luggage or purchased after security when available.

Travellers returning to countries outside the European Union should also check local customs rules before packing food, alcohol or plant-based products, as restrictions can vary by destination.

A little planning will help you avoid problems at the airport and make sure your Corfiot souvenirs arrive home safely.

Final Thoughts – What to Bring Home from Corfu

The best souvenirs from Corfu are those that carry a little of the island’s character. Choose a bottle of local olive oil, a jar of kumquat preserve, handmade ceramics or a special piece of jewellery.

Whenever possible, support local producers and artisans. Look for products that are genuinely connected to Corfu and reflect the island’s traditions and flavours.

The best souvenirs are often simple ones. Every time you use, taste or see them, they can bring back memories of your holiday in Corfu.

The southern coast of Corfu is home to some of the island’s most beautiful and diverse beaches. From long stretches of golden sand and impressive dunes to crystal-clear waters and peaceful seaside spots, the south offers something for every kind of traveller.

Whether you are looking for a lively beach with plenty of facilities, a quiet place to relax, or a wild natural landscape away from the crowds, the southern beaches of Corfu are well worth exploring.

Here are some of our favourite beaches in the south of the island, each with its own unique character.

Kavos Beach

Located at the southernmost tip of Corfu, Kavos Beach is one of the island’s liveliest seaside destinations. Its long sandy coastline is lined with beach bars, restaurants and water sports, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the summer.

Kavos is especially popular with younger visitors and those looking for entertainment, nightlife and a more energetic beach experience. During the day, however, you can still enjoy the sun, the sea and a relaxed holiday atmosphere.

Keep in mind that Kavos is approximately 40 km from Corfu Town, so it is worth planning your return journey in advance.

Agios Gordios (South)

Agios Gordios in southern Corfu is a peaceful beach with clear waters and a more relaxed atmosphere, ideal for visitors who prefer quieter seaside escapes.

Surrounded by natural scenery, it is a lovely place to swim, unwind and enjoy the beauty of the Ionian Sea away from the island’s busier resorts. Its calm character makes it a good choice for a slow and relaxing beach day.

Issos Beach

Issos Beach is one of the most impressive beaches in southern Corfu, known for its endless golden sand, crystal-clear waters and striking sand dunes.

Located next to Lake Korission, the beach is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape that feels wild and unspoilt. Its wide shoreline offers plenty of space to relax, while the steady sea breeze also makes Issos popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

It is an excellent choice for anyone looking to combine swimming, nature and a sense of freedom away from more crowded seaside resorts.

Santa Barbara Beach

Santa Barbara is a beautiful sandy beach on the southwest coast of Corfu, known for its clear waters, soft golden sand and relaxed atmosphere.

The beach is well organised, with sunbeds, umbrellas and seaside tavernas nearby, making it a comfortable choice for a full day by the sea. At the same time, its long coastline leaves plenty of room for those who prefer a quieter spot.

It is a lovely option for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying a laid-back summer day in southern Corfu.

Prasoudi Beach

Prasoudi is a small and peaceful beach on the southwest coast of Corfu, surrounded by lush greenery and a beautiful natural landscape.

Its clear waters and relaxed atmosphere make it ideal for visitors looking to escape the busier beaches and enjoy a quieter day by the sea. The beach has a more intimate feel, while nearby tavernas offer the chance to combine swimming with a leisurely meal overlooking the coast.

Prasoudi is a lovely choice for couples and travellers who appreciate calm surroundings, natural beauty and a slower pace.

Halikounas Beach

Halikounas is one of the wildest and most unspoilt beaches in southern Corfu, stretching along a narrow strip of land between the Ionian Sea and Lake Korission.

Its long sandy shoreline, open landscape and steady winds create a unique sense of space and freedom. The beach is especially popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers, while its natural setting makes it equally appealing to visitors who simply want to swim, walk along the coast and enjoy the scenery.

With fewer organised facilities than many other beaches, Halikounas is an excellent choice for those who prefer a more natural and peaceful seaside experience.

Marathias Beach

Marathias is a long sandy beach in southern Corfu, known for its clear waters, soft golden sand and relaxed summer atmosphere.

The beach offers both organised areas with sunbeds and umbrellas and quieter stretches where you can simply lay down your towel and enjoy the sea. Beach bars and tavernas nearby make it easy to spend the whole day here, from a morning swim to a late lunch by the coast.

Its spacious shoreline and easy-going character make Marathias a great choice for couples, families and anyone looking for a classic Corfu beach day.

Planning a holiday in Corfu? Packing the right essentials can make your trip easier, more comfortable and even more enjoyable. From sunny beach days and walks through Corfu Old Town to spontaneous road trips around the island, a little preparation goes a long way.

This Corfu packing list includes 10 useful things you’ll be glad you brought with you — plus a few practical tips to help you make the most of your stay.

1. Comfortable Walking Shoes

Corfu is a wonderful island to explore on foot, especially Corfu Old Town with its narrow kantounia, stone-paved streets and hidden corners. Comfortable shoes are essential not only for sightseeing, but also for visiting villages, viewpoints and beaches that may require a short walk.

A good pair of trainers or comfortable sandals will make a big difference, especially if you plan to spend several hours exploring.

2. High-SPF Sunscreen

The Corfu sun can be strong, especially during the summer months, so good sun protection is essential. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen and remember to reapply it regularly, particularly after swimming or spending several hours outdoors.

It is useful not only for beach days, but also for sightseeing, boat trips and long walks around the island.

3. Mosquito Repellent

Mosquitoes can be quite common in Corfu during the warmer months, especially in the evening and in greener areas of the island. A good mosquito repellent is a small item that can make your holiday much more comfortable.

It is particularly useful if you plan to enjoy dinner outdoors, sit on a balcony or terrace, or explore areas surrounded by vegetation.

4. A Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is especially important during the warmer months in Corfu. A reusable water bottle is practical for beach days, sightseeing and longer walks around the island.

It is also useful for road trips and excursions, when you may spend several hours away from shops or cafés.

5. A Light Jacket or Cardigan

Even in Corfu, evenings can sometimes feel cooler, especially in spring, early summer and autumn. A light jacket, cardigan or thin layer is useful for evening walks, boat trips and dinners outdoors.

It can also come in handy on windy days or when visiting higher parts of the island, where temperatures may feel a little lower.

6. A Small Day Bag or Backpack

A lightweight day bag or small backpack is one of the most useful things to have while exploring Corfu. It gives you enough space for your water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, phone, a light layer and any small purchases you make along the way.

Choose something comfortable and easy to carry, especially if you are planning day trips, beach visits or long walks around Corfu Old Town.

7. A Power Bank

When you are out exploring Corfu all day, your phone quickly becomes your map, camera, travel guide and sometimes even your ticket or booking confirmation. A small power bank can be extremely useful, especially on road trips, boat excursions or long beach days.

It is one of those items you may not think about before travelling — but you will definitely be glad you packed it.

8. Your Driving Licence

If you are thinking of renting a car or scooter, don’t forget to bring your driving licence. Having your own transport gives you much more freedom to explore Corfu’s villages, beaches and viewpoints at your own pace.

It is especially useful if you want to discover places outside Corfu Town or visit more remote parts of the island.

9. Swimwear and Beach Essentials

Corfu is famous for its beautiful beaches, so swimwear is an obvious must. It is also worth packing a beach towel, sunglasses, a hat and a light cover-up for those long summer days by the sea.

If you plan to explore several beaches during your stay, keeping these essentials together in one small beach bag will make your day much easier.

10. A Little Extra Space in Your Suitcase

Corfu has plenty of local products and small souvenirs that are worth taking home with you, from kumquat products and olive oil to handmade items and local delicacies. Leaving a little extra room in your suitcase can save you from struggling to fit everything in at the end of your trip.

It is a simple tip, but one you may appreciate when it is time to pack for home.

Ready for Your Corfu Holiday?

Packing for Corfu doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few practical essentials, you’ll be ready for sunny beach days, walks through the Old Town, spontaneous island adventures and relaxed evenings by the sea.

Pack light, leave a little room for something special to take home — and enjoy every moment of your Corfu escape.

One of the first visits that every visitor to Corfu makes is to the legendary home of the renowned sad Empress Sissi, the Achilleion of Corfu.

Achilleion Palace is one of the most famous sights of Corfu and Greece in general. It was built in the Corfu countryside by the Empress of Austro-Hungary Elizabeth, also known as Empress Sissy. It is undoubtedly one of the better known landmarks of the island, located in the village of Gastouri, ten kilometers southwest of Corfu town in the midst of nature. The palace looks like something from a fairy tale, the imperial opulence and the natural beauty of the landscape conspire to create a truly magical image.

The common element between Empress Sissi and Kaiser of Germany, Wilhelm II

The imposing form of the Palace takes the visitor back to another era, when Achilleion was the preferred destination of two figures of European history, the common element between them their adoration of Corfu, Greece and its culture: The Empress Sissy and the Kaiser of Germany, Wilhelm II. Sissy built Achilleion as a place to retreat and to ease her suffering, at the loss of her son. The Kaiser bought it after her death, but the war, which he himself declared, prevented him from enjoying it.

Sissi and the Achilleion of Corfu

Empress Elizabeth’s acquaintance with Corfu began in 1861 when she visited the island for the first time. She stayed for a long period and developed a special love for Corfu. At the same time, Sissy loved Greek mythology and culture. Wishing to immerse herself in classical Greece, she hired teachers who taught her Greek mythology and history as well as Greek literature, prose and poetry. Her favorite teacher was Constantine Christomanos, a student at the University of Vienna, who caused her to literally adore Greece.

The palace is influenced by the Greek and Roman Ionic style but also has elements of Pompeian architecture. Sissy wished to create an oasis around her with heroes drawn from the Odyssey and the Iliad. The frescoes, the paintings and the decoration in general are influenced by Greek Mythology and the history of Ancient Greece.

Sissy named the new building “Achilleion” in honour of the ancient Greek hero Achilles, whom she greatly admired. Inside Achilleion, magnificent frescoes and paintings adorn the reception areas.

After the assassination of Empress Sissy, Achilleion passed into the hands of her daughter Maria Valeria, who never lived there. It remained closed for nine years, but during all that time, by order of Francis Joseph, it was kept in perfect condition in memory of Sissy, whom he loved so much.

Sissy spent half the year in Corfu, mostly in the spring and autumn months. She indulged in long walks and mingled with the locals, supporting them in every way and even financing the village’s aqueduct, as the area had a serious water supply problem. A plaque was erected in her honour, which still stands today.

In 1907 the Achilleion was bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

During the First and Second World War, the Palace was occupied, used for other purposes and unfortunately looted.

Achilleion, the place you must visit in Corfu

After years of reconstruction and renovation, the Palace has regained its former glory.

Today, the imposing façade of the building captivates visitors from the first glance. Both the interior and the gardens take visitors back to the time when princes and princesses waltzed in the imposing halls with their distinguished guests. And even to the time when they read romantic poems in the vast gardens and when the princely children expressed their love to the chosen one of their hearts amid the colours of the glorious sunset.

The beautiful gardens of Achilleion offer stunning views of the Halikiopoulo Lagoon, Kanoni and Mouse Island.

The magical image relaxes the senses and creates the fairytale atmosphere that everyone dreams of on this visit.

Achilleion is one of the foremost architectural masterpieces of the island and a must for every visitor to Corfu.
